This collection contains letters, genealogical material and family history. The bulk of this collection are the Civil War letters, written back and forth between Branscomb family members. The subjects discussed include military and camp life, religion, various battles, the health of different family members - including the slaves at home, morale, supplies, and life at the homefront. Also included is a volume of letter typescripts, family trees, and family history.

The Third Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Montgomery in April, 1861. It was the first Alabama command that was sent to Virginia. Mustered into service at Lynchburg, 4 May, the regiment was ordered to Norfolk. There it was in a temporary brigade with the 1st and 12 VA, under Col. Jones M.
